Pilates was a somewhat unknown word until it started creeping into conversation somewhere around the 2000s- maybe even before then depending on who you asked and amongst which circles, and has largely remained and enigma for many reasons- one of which perhaps is that Pilates really has to be experienced to be understood.
There are now a wide range of Pilates styles available when you attend a Pilates class, perhaps borne from the variation of interpretations of how Pilates was originally taught by its founder, Joseph Pilates.
With The Pilates Diaries Podcast we’re inviting Pilates enthusiasts around the globe to share with us what they’ve noted down in their Pilates Diary. Our hope is that the Pilates Diaries Podcast goes some way to answering the question ” What is it that makes Pilates so special?”
We’ll take a privileged peek into the Pilates Diaries of our guests to gain a greater insight into the impact Pilates can have in all of our lives and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community at large.

Hi, I’m Bruce Hildebrand and this is the Pilates Diaries Podcast.
The mission of this podcast is to share the stories of the impact of Pilates to help you live and move with more joy, physical vitality, and renewed vigor.
Pilates was a somewhat unknown word until it started creeping into conversation somewhere around the 2000s- maybe even before then depending on who you asked and amongst which circles.
Pilates has largely remained and enigma for many reasons- one of which perhaps is that Pilates really has to be experienced to be understood- a little like trying to describe a handshake with a new acquaintance when it doesn’t feel quite right- you know the difference between an inauthentic wet fish and the real thing.
By the mid two thousands Pilates was beginning to become more commonplace in health, fitness, rehabilitation, and wellbeing settings with more and more people experiencing the benefits of practicing Pilates and the Pilates industry began to develop momentum which continues to this day.
There are now a wide range of Pilates styles available when you attend a Pilates class, perhaps borne from the variation of interpretations of how Pilates was originally taught by its founder, Joseph Pilates.
Yes, this is news still to many people, that there was a person behind the Method- in fact a rich history of adversity, hardship, resilience, determination, and purpose to highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle through a specific exercise practice that we now know as Pilates.
From origins in Germany, pre World War One, to Britain, and then the USA, Pilates’ evolution was shaped by the twists and turns of keeping up a physically active lifestyle, all fuelled by a fanatical insistence and foresight that by maintaining a regular physical practice remains the elixir of life that’s right under our noses and remains wildly under-rated in the pursuit of ongoing health and longevity.
Self-proclaimed as being 50 years ahead of his time, Joseph Pilates’ ideologies and teachings continue to ignite something special inside millions all over the world on a daily basis. And yet despite this uptake Pilates remains well down the list of accepted and recognized practices recommended by health practitioners, lost in the sundry of modalities that ‘might’ make a difference.
On the contrary when you speak to anyone who’s done Pilates- the most common response is that it makes ‘all’ the difference. So why the disparity? Why so little relative acceptance? Why doesn’t a greater proportion of the planet reap the benefits of the regular physical practice of Pilates?
Enter The Pilates Diaries Podcast. The mission of this podcast is to share the stories of the impact of Pilates in people’s lives so you can hear for yourself the real life experiences of people who have been touched by the regular physical practice of Pilates- how it has transformed their understanding of their own body, how it has become a way of life, how a commitment to the principles of the practice can give relief from the aches and pains that often come with the trials and tribulations of habits in our daily lives, sporting endeavors, pregnancies, surgeries, injuries, the glorious effects of aging, and the list goes on across the full spectrum of ways Pilates can help you live and move with more joy, physical vitality, and renewed vigor.
Being brought up in a family where storytelling was all around me and having a much-older brother who adventured around the world and always returned with riveting stories of exploration and discovery- I aim, through The Pilates Diaries Podcast, to share the stories of the impact of the pioneering work of Joseph Pilates- told through the eyes of those who’ve reaped the benefits of his teaching and, through their experiences, help expand on the message that Pilates really does have a place in all of our lives to help us be our own hero in understanding our own health and wellbeing really is our own responsibility that we really can influence our own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual selves by moving our bodies.
A supposed favorite quote of Joseph Pilates was- with my inexperienced attempt at German- Es ist der Geist, der sich den Körper baut" – translating to “It is the spirit that builds the body” or “builds itself a body”. This is one of many riches in the historical stories of Joseph Pilates’ life from 883 to 1967.
With The Pilates Diaries Podcast we’re inviting Pilates enthusiasts around the globe to share with us what they’ve noted down in their Pilates Diary. What notes they’ve taken on their journey of their Pilates participation. From the original common question being " What even is Pilates?" our hope is that the Pilates Diaries Podcast goes some way to answering the newer question – “What is it that makes Pilates so special?” We’ll take a privileged peek into the Pilates Diaries of our guests to gain a greater insight into the impact Pilates can have in all of our lives and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community at large.
